Virtuous Totalitarianism

16/9/2016

Picture
Germany has gone with its migration policy a very special path of wide-open doors.  In a kind of  moral complacency Germans begin to look down to their European neighbours. The image of the I-know-it-all is back: Hungarians are racists, Czechs are nationalists and Poland are Christian fundamentalists, Slovaks are philistines, Danes are right-wing populists, French are cowards because they fear Le Pen and Britons are egoists.

Following the twaddles of German politicians and media pundits I can clearly see more and more bad clichés about its European neighbours like we are back in the darkest days of nationalism 100 years ago. What is disturbing is  that in all this ecstasy of the German “Welcome-culture” a trend of arrogant complacency is dominating every discussion: all others who are skeptical, cautious or worried are being degraded. Particularly Hungarian and Brits are getting the full blast of the “New German Virtue & Pride” in the form of malice.

Our European neighbours were touched by the German Goals - first on its stance to migrations, then stunned, finally angry and now horrified. Germany is completely isolated with his attitude, but wanted to impose its will on all other EU partners: even in Brussels this assessment is beginning to be solidified.

German attitude of its  I-know-it-all awakens unpleasant memories of the past. Just that it comes  this time under the guise of moral presumptuousness. It a frightening lowering of people, as if the Hungarians are not a cultural nation, but a dumb gang hating foreigners, or as if Brits are not for decades an open multi-cultural society, but would like to fill  the Channel Tunnel with concrete, and if as Pols did not mastered impressively tremendous upheavals , but a nation of conservative stubborn ultra catholics.

We command, you obey

That more and more German politicians run up and down the country with a “Rescuers Candle” of peoples helper around the country and denigrate it neighbouring people, is a bitter irony of the current craze virtue. If now politicians in Berlin also openly threaten with blackmail, that if not immediately all doors are opened by other members they Berlin would cut EU funds, then this is the lowest  point of an attitude, which allegedly wants good evil but brings evil. You could also announce the same by shouting: We command, you obey, but immediately.

The fact is that Angela Merkel is with her “welcome-come" policy in Europe basically insulated. The truth behind this is simple: the majority of Europeans do not want uncontrolled mass immigration of millions of Muslims. Disqualifying this position as immoral fails to recognise that there is also a moral responsibility for protecting the own weak, the own culture, the own security, the own freedom, the own stability of our societies in order not being silenced under a barrage of laments about “discrimination”.

The European neighbours make Germany this charge: who abruptly enforces a Muslim mass immigration, risks that the statics of Europe  tilts, involving attacks on social systems, with the burden on the entire continent for generations to come as heavy integration conflicts are happen over decades. That may be seen as exaggerated, but the anxious demand is legitimate for the simple fact that especially the socially weaker Europeans will have to endure social conflicts in their neighbourhoods, in their schools, in their backyards. If  Germans now want to impose their dogma without a fair, open debate, then you do not have to wonder about resistance.

Is Germany unwillingly entering special ways to disintegrate Europe?

In Berlin, however, the political Nomenklatura around Merkel is acting as not two opinions on this mass migration is allowed. Only “to save”. This is a precept. So you establish a totalitarianism of good and discredits anyone who disagrees for misanthrope. But this is the opposite of the plural, human political culture that Europe represents.

So, if Merkel - with best intentions - conveyed a uncontrolled mass migration that affects deeply many neighbours which is lasting and dangerous, by not asking her neighbours beforehand then she is somewhat reckless with Europe. This too is a moral issue. It is time to rise from the high horse of morality and to join the bottom of realpolitik. Germany in the guise of alls-gooders is not a likeable country. We should talk to each other again as rushing over one another more.
