 Many years ago, I asked a 12-year-old Lebanese in Beirut for directions. I was new here, had come from Germany and got lost. He helped me, I followed him until we arrived at my uncle's apartment. I thanked the nice boy.
Today 14 years later I met him again and asked him if everything was ok. He replied: "The circumstances in this country are almost unbearable. Unemployed since Corona and only depressed. There is no real social network in Lebanon. He is right because Lebanon is falling more and more. Unemployment rate is 85%. All the unemployed have to live with 13 times the price increase for the most basic food. I took the young man to my uncle this morning and gave him a plate full of rice. Also juice and whatever else was in the house and on the table. He had put much of it in a bag and taken it home to his family. At that time he had helped me, today I helped him. |

I was at the beginning of my career as a photojournalist. If someone had told me that 40 years is not enough to satisfy parasitic political leaders in their enrichment frenzy, I would have shaken my head in denial. Lebanese are quite business-minded and intelligent people. It had even managed to build a relatively good education system. Unimaginable sums for "investments" from Saudi Arabia, however, served only the restoration of the city center, the marina for luxury yachts and hotels to turn the city into a vacation destination for the Saudis themselves to escape the hot the summer months and have a bit fun with girls. The former French occupation social networks nothing was invested. Today, in 2021, the education system is completely ruined. The country is bankrupt. Completely broke. Billions of US dollars have been shifted through Lebanese banks entiching the minions of a patronage system unthinkable since the times of the feudalistic epoch... It cannot be described more precisely and those who feel addressed know... In reality, it is mafia gangs from the drug milieu that have helped this militant group to make arms purchases on a large scale.
