With the decline of seaside resorts in the UK, from the 1960s onwards Southend-on-Sea lost much of its originally charming centre as tourist destination as it was developed for commerce, meaning many of the original features were destroyed through redevelopment or neglect. Southend today is a small, clean town, just one hour by train from London City, perfect for a weekend getaway. With 10 km of seafront there's a fantastic choice of beaches. With three Blue Flags and seven Quality Coast Awards, this is one of the cleanest stretches of seaside in the UK.
